Parkati (One with the Clipped Wings), Mixed Media Installation, 2023
Parkatti (One with the Clipped Wings) 2023
Video Installation with papier maché, fabric, chicken mesh, synthetic hair/braids, looped video on a DVD player (2 minutes)72 x 120 x 8 in.
The Hindi word ‘Par-katti’ means a bird with clipped wings and is used sarcastically for women who cut their hair short, indicating free-spirited women who do not stick to prescriptive traditions. The word is embedded in linguistic symbolism, loaded with dynamics of power and domination in patriarchal structure.. The installation opens up a discourse on how language and culture prohibit women and people from marginalized communities from claiming agency over themselves and growing to their full potential. The work renders the Hindi word for wings, “पर ”, through braided hair in wire and a figure with wide-open wings made of chicken mesh, often used for making cages and barriers. The work is dedicated to women activists and visionaries Savitribai Phule, Fatema Shaikh, and Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, who worked relentlessly to create liberatory spaces by advocating against gender and caste oppression in India.
